The first battle of Panipat was fought between Babur and Ibrahim Lodi on 21 April 1526 AD. Ibrahim Lodi's vast army was defeated and destroyed by Babur's artillery, gunnery and cavalry forces. Ibrahim was killed in the battle of Lodi. As a result of the victory in this battle, Babur occupied Delhi and Agra and declared himself king. Dr. Ishwari Prasad states that "Thus Babur was established as the Emperor of Delhi and the sovereignty of India passed to the Chas Ta Tukis." According to Rushbrup Williams and Cambridge Historians, the use of cannon was what led to Babur's victory. The First Battle of Panipat is an important battle in Indian history. As a result of this war, the ruling power of the Lodi dynasty disappeared forever. Babur was already in possession of vast territories as far as Delhi and Agra and the fertile Ganga-Yamuna valley as far as Jainpur opened to him. Historian Dr. S. Roy says that "the Battle of Panipat ended the Lodi rule by no more than maa." According to Dr. Satish Chandra, the battle of Panipat can never be called the final battle from the political point of view.
