Trapped orcas escape from drift ice near Japan

! A pod of orcas, also known as killer whales, that was trapped in drift ice off the coast of Hokkaido, Japan, has apparently escaped safely.

Location: Hokkaido, Japan

Date: February 6-7, 2024

Number of orcas: Around 10

The orcas were first spotted by a fisherman on Tuesday morning and were seen to be trapped in a small area of open water surrounded by thick ice. Video footage taken by a drone showed the orcas struggling and appearing to be in distress.

Concerns were raised about the welfare of the orcas, and some people called for the Japanese government to help free them. However, by Wednesday morning, the orcas were no longer visible in the area, and it is believed that they were able to escape on their own as the gaps in the ice widened.

Local officials said that they were relieved to hear that the orcas had escaped safely and that they would continue to monitor the situation.
